Amy Jiang

Movie Recommendation: Midnight Special

Augustine Pasin

Midnight Special written and directed by Jeff Nichols was one of my favorite movies of this year. It includes a memorable cast of characters including Adam Driver, whom you might recognize as Kylo Ren from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, who only grow on you as the movie progresses. The movie begins with Alton Meyer is a boy with bizarrely powerful abilities and strange weaknesses. In the middle of the night, his father, Roy, spirits him away from the isolated cult that practically worships him and is determined to regain him at all costs. At the same time, Alton’s abilities have been noticed by the US government as well and they are equally insistent on getting to the bottom of this mystery with Paul Sevier of the National Security Agency leading the Federal pursuit with his own questions. These rival hunts force father and son into a desperate run towards a looming date that has been prophesized by Alton to change everything. (IMBD)

What I think makes Midnight Special an amazing movie is the slow use of foreshadowing and changing character perspectives to guide the audience as the plot of the movie unfolds. You never spend too long watching one character’s perspective, and the information is never divulged too easily. Jeff Nichols never treats his audience as unintelligent, pushing viewers to guess at what might happen next. The effect of this is an ever looming feeling of suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the film. The movie is also excellently casted. The dynamics of the actors’ abilities, chemistry and superb dialogue makes an otherwise fantastical movie surprisingly believable. This “believability” is further emphasized by the contrasting supernatural and gritty realism that Nichols presents. grim motel rooms, gas station forecourts and back roads, their drabness vividly captured in widescreen photography juxtaposes the alien abilities and concepts presented through Alton.

One of the main critiques of the movie is its, at times, convoluted plot. As David Edelstein, a writer for the movie magazine the Vulture said: “Nichols’s mythic aspirations are still a puzzle to me; I’m not sure he has connected all the dots in his psyche yet, or that he fully brings off his finale.” Despite the criticism, Midnight Special is one of my favorite movies of this year and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves sci-fi, suspense or just a damn good film.

Lego Batman

Huiwen Lim

A 90-minute action-fantasy film of Lego Batman was rated 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it does not surpass the ratings for Lego Movie, it is by far one of the most humorous movies of this year; for some, this can be considered as one of the best Batman movies to exist.

Many moviegoers are too bored with the usual superheroes for being too serious – except for Deadpool. However, Lego Batman movie differs greatly from the original Batman franchise; as it takes on a never seen before light hearted and hilarious version of this well-known superhero. Directed by Chris McKay the Lego Batman movie tells a story with an important life message for all ages.

Batman starts off as a lonely superhero, with no one except for his butler. But while being Bruce Wayne (Batman’s second identity), a millionaire, he accidentally adopts Dick Grayson, an orphan who aspires to be like Batman and Bruce Wyane. Dick Grayson was ecstatic. Not soon after, he finds out about Bruce Wayne’s secret… that Batman lives in his basement. Little does Dick Grayson realize that Bruce Wayne and Batman are the same people, and instead thinks that Wayne and Batman are sharing him with a son after Batman told Dick Grayson that he would also adopt him.

Batman takes Dick Grayson on as a sidekick who would eventually save Gotham city from Joker and his evil villainous sidekicks. And through this Batman learns the meaning of teamwork and friendship – though this ending sound cliché, it works well because this is a family movie.

This fast-paced movie intended for children, teens and adults alike, makes numerous references to other superheroes and even mocks the Batman franchise and Suicide Squad.

BLAMMO!

— Tales of wonder and woe from BLAMMO! week

Clementine Li

The YK Pao School campus this week is a strange sight indeed. Herds of excited junior students holding multicolored plastic spoons chase each other across courtyards, teachers and senior students drop all pretense of maturity and quarrel over the ownership of one spoon, and everyone fidgets with an alarmed expression as they walk across hallways in the dark.

This year, we have witnessed what is hopefully to be a long-term tradition on campus, an annual period of craziness and mischief— BLAMMO! (Yes, the capitalization and use of exclamation mark are necessary follows every mentioning of this word.)

The rules are relatively simple. Each student will be given a colored spoon at the beginning of the week. Green for spring, yellow for summer, red for autumn, blue for winter. Each house is assigned a “target house”, whose members this house will “attack” by tapping them with a spoon when they are not actively holding their own spoon in their hands. At the end of the week, the house that inflicts heaviest casualty rates win, and receive the honorable “Cup of Spoons”.

Despite numerous restrictions, such as one cannot be “BLAMMO!ed” in the academic building or cafeteria, nor during class time and AF times, the game has generated school-wide heat, as fanatics crouch in corners, spoon in hand the second the recess bell sounds.

One such enthusiast, Mike “The Han” from Year 12, who has collected almost twenty spoons from different houses by the time of Wednesday afternoon, described his strategy: “I take spoons of all colors. This way, even the spoons that cannot be counted towards my house’s casualties will no longer be used by other houses to win more spoons!”

An anonymous source confirms the fact that Han’s dormitory room is laden with spoons of every shape and color, and that he deliberates before the scoreboard every evening, contemplating what number of spoons he should supplement the DSLO casualty spoon box with the following day. Within the bounds of the boys’ dormitory, The Han is now referred to as “the Mastermind Behind the Game”.

A faculty BLAMMO! aficionado, Ms. KP who is the IB Economics teacher, stated that “I go to the bathroom with my spoon in my mouth. When I ride my scooter home, I do it with my spoon in my mouth. Be prepared!”

Inflicting heavy casualties, Ms. KP laments that, “Students here are too trusting. They say, ‘You’re a teacher! Are you seriously gonna take my spoon?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah!’” Perhaps BLAMMO! would be an important experience for the students, shedding light on the hostility and dangers that await beyond the limits of the school gates.

Minnie Du

Motherless Baby — When Science Fiction Comes Real

Caroline Yu

Science Corner Issue 1 Feb. 21, 2017

It is common knowledge that fertilisation only takes place when a sperm meets an egg cell. Although this principle has always seemed eternal and immutable,  now, with rapid advancement in genetic study, more and more scientists have started to question this fundamental law of nature: Is it possible to create offspring without female egg cells?

According to Dr. Tony Perry, a molecular embryologist and senior author of genetic study, this is “about different ways of making embryos.”  In fact, in the latest research, he and his team have successfully demonstrated fertilisation of mice without using any normal egg cell, but instead with a non-variable embryo and sperm cell extracted from two male mice. Since a full genetic quota consists of ‘half and half’ genetic information from both cells, ‘excessive’ chromosomes from the embryo were removed through division (more specifically, parthenogenote).  In practice, scientists first “tricked” the sperm cell developing into the embryo using a special chemical which copies and divides itself completely.  After injecting the sperm cell into the embryo, it can gradually grow into a fetus in an artificial womb.

The success rate of the experiment is only 24 percent, with 7 pups being born out of 30. However, in comparison to the ‘Dolly the Sheep’ experiment (cloning by transferring DNA to donated eggs), it is far more successful. Moreover, the team found that these survival pups could carry on reproducing themselves, which indicated their similarity with normal mice.

In future, if a human “motherless baby” can be achieved, then the role of females in terms of reproduction would dramatically change. Long ago, in 1924, J.B.S. Haldane already predicted that by 2074, only 30% of births would be natural. Zoltan Istvan, a transhumanist who believes in the fictional world, even argued that the date may be closer to 20~30 years from now, as these new genetic technologies will become more and more mature and ubiquitous. For gay couples and infertile females, this technology is going to give them hope for breeding a lovely baby.

Dr Perry said that his team was planning to take the next step of attempting to produce live offspring from ordinary non-egg cells, such as skin cells. In the modern world, it seems that anything can be possible.

Senior Secondary Actors and Actresses Ensemble

Alaxy Hu

科学怪人是Senior Secondary Actors and Actresses Ensemble 向去年离开的Ms.

SSAAE Ms. Arth:

American Government to Scrap Two of Obama’s Influential Policies

Augustine Pasin

On February 2, 2017, the Republican-controlled Congress moved to repeal two of Obama’s rules on the environment and gun control. The environmental policy prevents coal mining industries from dumping coal debris into streams. The gun control policy includes extensive background checks for gun purchasers with mental disabilities.

The coal mining rule has already been voted for by Congress and Senate, and will soon be passed on to Donald Trump in order to be signed. Upon the President’s signing, the document will become nullified. Trump is expected to sign the document.

Supporters of the policy, mainly Democrats, claim that the policy will bring harm to the environment (especially stream ecosystems) and set a precedent for the removal of policies intended to prevent pollution.

Denouncers of the policy, like Senator Mitch McConnell, argue that the stream rule was “an attack against coal miners and their families.” Furthermore, that the removal of the rule will remove pressure on coal-miners and their families, while creating more jobs.

On the other hand, the gun control policy has yet to be voted upon by the Senate, but passed through the House of Representatives with a 235-180 vote in favor of repealing. The policy requires extensive background checks on gun purchasers with mental disabilities so severe that they are unable to work and therefore require a guardian to handle their personal finance.

Representative Bob Goodlatte, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, exclaimed that those flagged by the act are “no longer able to exercise their Second Amendment right.” The second amendment allows all American’s the right to “bear-arms” or purchase fire-arms. The Republican representatives seemed to generally agree that such a policy infringed upon the fundamental rights of the American people.

Obama originally enacted the policy in response to the Sandy Hook Shooting, in which twenty children and six teachers were killed by a lone gunman with mental health issues. Supporters of the gun control policy worry that by removing the limitations on individuals with mental health issues, the government is inviting another mass shooting to occur.

The gun control policy is expected to pass through Senate sometime within the next month.

Minnie Du

Kick Off to Win Again

Thomas Zhu

The 2017 Season has only just begun but our varsity Football teams have already secured several victories. Our U19 boys’ and girls’ football teams being returning champions are more than determined to defend their crowns and to rise victorious once again this season. Our coaches and players are the envy of the rest of Shanghai, and they are what makes the team great. Let’s hear what the two coaches and the players have to say about the new season.

Coach Sancinelli (Coach of U19 Boys Football Team):

‘I can not say for sure right now as we are only two games into the season and both our opponents are not very strong, so I do not have very good reference. However, I am happy with how they absorb my philosophy and apply what I teach them during training onto the game fields. I would have a better answer in a week’s time as we will face a stronger component, but so far, I am happy. I think we are on the right path towards winning the championship.’

Andrew Xing (Defender of U19 Boys Football Team):

‘This will be a slightly more challenging season for us since we’ve lost some key players which has forced us to alter our tactics and positions. The French school, who just joined the league this year, are certainly a decent team that we are going to face. But we are highly motivated and we will try our best to defend our title.’

Mark Wang (Mid-field of U19 Boys Football Team):

‘To be honest, the 2016-17 football season will be an extremely challenging season for all of our players. Tactically speaking, the depth of our squad has been weakened since we lost some of the most crucial players last season. Furthermore, all of our opponents will be strongly motivated to defeat us as we won the title last year. Despite the challenges mentioned, our team has had more than enough time to prepare for the league, and will definitely contribute each and every of our individual efforts to secure the title for another year.’

John Chiba (Goal Keeper of U19 Boys Football Team):

‘We only have eight games this season but it’s not going to be easy. Eight games facing eight different teams; this is going to be a long season. For this season, no matter who will be there in front of us, we will be fighting until the last minute to protect our title. As you may know we’ve lost some of our key players which means rest of us, the team, will play with 200% and maximum effort in every game, no matter home or away. We all know that the trophy will belong to YK Pao, don’t we?’

Coach Donald (Coach of U19 Girls Football Team):

‘I expect my team to continue with their same attitude to training, same hard work, and same amount of effort to improve the level of their performance. We’ve got two tournaments and a pact league season, and the girls have set themselves their own goal to win the league. What I can say is this group of girls here has a fantastic mentality to learn and that’s one of the main reasons why I enjoy coaching them. I am hoping we can do a football tour to Beijing, so we can show case our technical ability and technical competence to people we have never played with before. The girls strong will to practise and improve, and the actual progress they make from the training pitch to the football games are what I would most commend them on. So far we’ve had three games and scored 22 goals, and that’s fantastic! I’m hoping for another positive season, whether we win or not isn’t important, what matters is if the girls achieve their own targets or not. If they achieve their own goals, then it reflects on the power of objective setting and just how hard they’ve worked to achieve these goals.’

Chiara Aduino (Striker of U19 Girls Football Team)

‘This season our team has improved a lot through many training sessions with Mr. Donald. So far, we’ve played against many schools in the league and this has helped us improve our technique and build our confidence further. I believe that we are going to continue to play better and better. It is certain that we will face a lot of challenges but we will definitely work through it as a team.’

Diana Yang (Mid-Field of U19 Girls Football Team)

‘The season will definitely be more challenging for us, since more teams entered the league this season. The French school certainly has improved, which demands a higher quality of performance from us. Several members left our team and some newly joined, so the season will be challenging to this new team in the awaiting fixtures. This season will be more challenging but also more exciting!’

Amanda Weng (Defender of U19 Girls Football Team)

‘This season will be more exciting since there are more teams joining in the league. Other teams from the league are training hard to beat us, so it is definitely more demanding for us. There were some members who left last year and new members joined this year. We have won all the fixtures played this season so far and we will keep the work rate up to keep this record.’

With the changes in the team organisation and our opponents getting stronger, the 2017 season throws many challenges at our teams. However, our teams are highly motivated, well trained and are certain to perform with great effort in defending their titles. Let us hope that once again, YK Pao will be the champions!
